Building a Clematis trellis

The clematis on our house wall has had nothing to climb on since last year, when we painted the house and had to take the old trellis down. The old one was decades old and had seen better days, so putting it back up wasn't really an option. This video is about building its replacement.

The whole thing is made from spruce I milled on the property about two weeks before this build. It's green lumber, which is fine for outdoor use, but you'd want to let it dry a lot longer before bringing anything like this indoors. Working with freshly milled spruce also means dealing with a fair amount of resin, which gets a bit sticky.

One thing worth touching on from the build: knot holes. When a knot runs through the full width of a thin slat, the piece is genuinely weak and requires almost no force to snap it right through the center. Something to keep in mind when sorting through material for any project where the pieces will be under real load.

The joinery is about as simple as it gets, with just nails clinching it together. Crude but effective, and it's not going anywhere.

The clematis seems happy with it, anyway and has grown a lot since the project started. I could not have waited any longer than I did to start this build.
